The Best Writing Advice I Ever Received

Writing Advice...

There's an abundance of the stuff out there. Some of it's good. Some of it's bad, but most of all, does it help anyone?

I think it depends on the kind of author you are. Some of us are plotters and some of us are pantsers (writing by the seat of your pants).

I'm a pantser. 😊

Along the way, I've heard some several tips, especially for when you're stuck. Here are a few that have helped me.

1) You're writing like you're on a running path and can't see the end in sight and then suddenly, it's like you've come to the edge of a cliff for no apparent reason. Develop a minor character. Back up a bit. Find a guy/or gal or alien...the bus driver, whatever...and give them a backstory. You missed something there...and you'll find your way back to the running trail with a richer story.

2) Like Stephen King says...write the rough draft with the door closed and the second draft with the door open...and he's right. He actually says more than that in his book, On Writing, but that was my major takeaway.

3) But one of my favorite pieces of advice on writing comes from my friend Robert Dugoni, (pictured above). He actually teaches a few classes on writing and I got to meet him a few times at Thrillerfest back before my fiction started coming true, in 2016. The one thing he does, that I began doing is: take your favorite novel of all time and keep it with you as you write. His is the Stephen King's Green Mile. (coincidently)
Dugoni says, to read a passage or two...perhaps a page and just get your mind into the cadence of a story before you begin writing. He does this when he's about to write and it seems to put your mind into the muse's lair.
I do this too...only I use my favorite novel by Anthony Doerr, All the Light We Cannot See.

With those three things...I'll get back to my current work in progress...the second book after The French Wardrobe, Pearls and Peril, Book 2...coming soon!
